Abstract
Manufacturing companies spend approximately 20% of their revenue for reworking substandard products. This not only affects the bottom line but also affects the pricing of the product in the market. High rejection rate has tremendous effects on productivity. Hence, there is a need to analyze the existing system by means of systematic recording and critical examination of various root causes of rejection; thereby rejection rate can be controlled effectively. Among different methods used, six sigma has been considered as a powerful business strategy that employs a well structured continuous improvement methodology. To reduce process variability and rejection rate, business processes need the effective application ofsix sigma and quality control tools by means of an expert system. In this paper, an attempt has been made to show how rejection rate can be reduced while manufacturing steering knuckle in an auto component manufacturing industry by employing expert system.
