Abstract

Most of the techniques relatedto part familyformation require precisenumerical dataforpart'sfeatures. However, in manysituations, the part'sfeatures are too ill defined and are too susceptible to analysis by traditional discrete methods.Fuzzy logic allows the parts to belong to different groups with different memberships. Moreover, different attributes may not have equal importance. This paper suggests a methodology for part family formation using fuzzy logic. The methodology can be integrated with the existing coding systems used by industries. The methodology is validated using problemsfrom literature.
