Abstract
This paper reviews the conceptual background in sustainable fishery management. Despite considerable investment in stock assessment methodology and expertise, fisheries worldwide are over-exploited. Fisheries management must be based on solid biological expertise, but must also, ultimately, satisfy the sustainability criteria. Fisheries management that disregards economic objections may succeed in preserving stocks but will waste other resources such as investment funds and labour. Likewise, fisheries management that disregards social objections may not succeed in social welfare for the stakeholders. This is a review paper which is specifically directed at fisheries management to help in achieving growth through balance among the biological, the social and the economic requirements of fisheries.
