MEASURING QUALITY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM MATURITY IN A CABLE MANUFACTURING UNIT, USING EFQM EXCELLENCE MODEL - A CASE STUDY ANALYSIS

Abstract

This paper is on the aspect of measuring Quality Management System (QMS) maturity in the context of a cable manufacturing unit. The European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM) Model was used as standard reference for assessing the maturity of the organization in their quality practices and system. Evaluating maturity of QMS was the main focus of the project and EFQM model was used as a tool to measure the efficiency of the system in order to understand the current status. High level of adoption of quality management system and business excellence models can help the organization to improve their competitiveness and performance. Nowadays, achieving excellence in organizations is necessary in order to cope up with frequent changes in the global markets; this means organizations have to face vital challenges. Using of business excellence model is one of the effective methods in driving organization excellence. In this study data was collected from various departments with respect to the EFQM model and its nine basic criteria. The findings of this study indicate that in the quality processes only ISO 9001:2008 is being adopted in the organization. Since EFQM excellence model is one of the versatile tools used globally to evaluate the performance of the organization at Quality Management Systems, the organization used EFQM model as a diagnostic tool for assessing the QMS and finding the gaps in the system to drive the organization towards the journey of excellence. With this model, improved results were obtained in some of the criteria. Using this approach the organization would balance its priorities, allocate the resources optimality; generate realistic business plans, in appropriate manner that can lead to customer satisfaction.
