Abstract

In the current slowing economy in India, the manufacturing industry isexperiencing tremendous pressuresfor improving the operational performance. The value chain in the operations, consisting of the flow from the supplier to the plant, to manufacturing cells, to across plants, to assembly cells and finally to the customer is under high stress. The combined effect of the rapidly changing customer demand, volatility in the product mix pattern and theshrinking profit margins has resulted in the application of some key Manufacturing excellenceprocesses.Implementation of the high-touch-low-tech Value stream mapping (VSM) process of Lean hashastened the velocity of value flow in the chain. A successful application of the lean principlesis highlighted in the case study of a typical multi model auto aggregate manufacturing through this paper,

Keywords- Value stream, Value stream mapping(VSM), Interval, Pitch, Super market, Kanban, Pull system, Single piece flow, SMED(Single minute exchange of dies), Lead time, Takt time.
