Abstract
Lean manufacturing practices (LMPs) are considered as one of the important initiatives to become world class, by improving every dimension of competitiveness, by different types of manufacturing organizations. Although they are facing challenges to implement them effectively and efficiently. These challenges result from lack of awareness and understanding of the concept, lack of top management commitment and absence of a road map for implementation. Additionally, some contextual as well as contingency factors also affect the implementation. This work focuses on empirical studies in which various aspects of implementation of LMPs and their effects on performance of plant are investigated. The outcome of this study reveals that the need of planned activities, trained workforce, cultured environment and thorough understanding of lean principles are most essential requirements to implement LMPs effectively and efficiently.
