TURNING OF ALUMINIUM METAL MATRIX COMPOSITE

Manoj Kumar Gupta

Abstract

Aluminium matrix composites (AMCs) are one of the new generation materials in the field of material science. It has numerous applications in the field of automobile and aircraft industries. The turning is one of the important machining processes used in many industries to give the desired shape and size of material into useful form. The aluminium matrix composites consists of softer metal matrix materials of aluminium and its alloys and hard particles of reinforcement ceramics materials. The reinforcement materials are several oxides, carbide and nitride in the form of particulates, whiskers and fibers. Out of this aluminum Oxide and silicon Carbide are commonly used. Due to the presence of hard particle in composite and abrasive in nature its machining is difficult. The AMCs required costly tool material like polycrystalline diamond tools (PCD), advance tooling and manufacturing methods which increases the machining cost. The present papers discuss the various aspects of cutting parameters, tool materials, cutting conditions, and optimization techniques which make the turning of AMCs more optimal and cost effective.
