Abstract

Ever since the beginning of the human civilization, man has been on a continuous pursuit to optimize utilization of available scarce resources. Post industrialization organizations have adopted a variety of tools, techniques and measures to improve productivity and in turn profitability of their businesses. A variety of industrial engineering tools and techniques have evolved over the past 100+ years. In the pre-globalization era, major thrust was on the use of traditional IE techniques like Method Study, Value Engg.. Systematic Layout Planning, Industrial Scheduling, Operations Research Models, Quality Control & Assurance, etc. However, post globalization newer concepts like Lean Manufacturing, Agile Manufacturing. Theory of Constraints, Business Process Engineering, TQM, TPM got evolved and were adopted to improve the productivity in organizations. This paper adopts a multifarious approach combining the traditional and latest tools/techniques in industrial engineering to effect dramatic improvements in the productivity of a reputed company in steel furniture industry. A comprehensive methodology is adopted to systematically analyze and effect productivity improvements. The results of implementation are summarized in the conclusion part of the paper.
