Abstract

Improving competitiveness has become the motto of organizations in the arena of globalization. As the customers are becoming more aware and demanding, the lifecycle of the product has reduced and demand has become dynamic. Hence manufacturing organizations are practicing different quality and productivity improvement initiatives which increase the competiveness dimensions like quality, cost, flexibility and delivery [1]. Amongst such practices like Just In Time (JIT), Total Quality Management (TQM), 6-sigma and Lean Manufacturing Practices (LMPs), the LMPs have the inherent characteristics to increase the competitiveness of the organizations by eliminating the non value added activities (NVAs) [2]. When India is being focused as manufacturing hub on the world map, the LMPs have the greatest potential to this consideration. This essay discusses the competitiveness index of India, consequence of Indian Auto manufacturing sector and significance of LMPs for increasing the manufacturing competitiveness of India.
