Abstract
Best quality products with least possible prices have become the need of the hour for organizations, thereby pressurizing them to come up with state of the art approaches to do this efficiently and effectively using best practices. In such a scenario, cellular manufacturing acts as a stepping stone to achieve world class manufacturing status. In this paper, an attempt has been made to review the methods developed by past researchers to solve cellular manufacturing problems. The literature surveydeveloped and analysis of the pros and cons of various methods will help researchers select the most suitable method according to input characteristics of the problem. The paper highlights the characteristics of various methods and compares them which may be useful to the researchers. By the end of this paper, one will understand that genetic algorithm is one of the popular tools for solving problems in cellular manufacturing as it gives optimal results in a reasonable time. The study has shown that combining mathematical approaches with artificial intelligence techniques like genetic algorithm and simulated annealing, simplify the analysis.
