Abstract

This paper describes a productivity enhancement of main sill in leading manufacturing industry of cotton ginning machine and bale press machine. For assembling the bale press machine, main sill is important component as it withstands the entire weight of assembly. Assembly process is initiated with main sill. A preliminary observation of main sill indicates that all important machining operations like drilling; milling etc. are done by SANCO machine. Current scenario of SANCO machine has revealed three major areas of productivity improvement namely cycle time reduction, power consumption minimization and higher material removal rate(MRR). Present paper deals with cycle time reduction and experimental planning by Taguchi's method of design of experimentation. By detailed analysis of existing process and changing the dimensions of main sill a9.375% improvement in time required for machining was achievedi.e. 15 min was saved on each sill. This paper has discussed an application of Taguchi's method of design of experimentation (D.O.E.) for investigating the effect of process parameters on power consumption and Material removal rate (MRR). L'orthogonal array has been constructed for three different levels of machining parameters, which are depth of cut (ap), working engagement (ac), feed rate (vf). The optimum machining parameters for minimum power consumption and maximum MRR are 8 mm depth of cut, 80 mm working engagement and 700 mm/min of feed rate.
