Abstract

Several studies conducted around the globe have shown that anthropogenic emissions are causing serious threat to the normal existence on earth. Due to the emissions from different sources, our earth's environmental stability and hence the ecosystem is undergoing severe changes. This is causing sudden changes in the weather patterns as evident from the floods of Mumbai (2005), cloudburst in Leh, Ladakh (2010), cloudburst in Uttarakhand (2013) and floods in Chennai (2015). United Nations has introduced the Kyoto protocol and based on this protocol, several countries have introduced their own energy saving schemes. This study investigates the effects of Perform, Achieve and Trade (PAT) scheme, India's energy saving and carbon reduction scheme which has recently concluded its first phase of operation during the period 2012-2015. In addition, this study explains the emission trading scheme and renewable energy credit trading system adopted in India and other countries. The study also documents energy saving performance of targeted designated consumers distributed across eight sectors in three selected states, such as Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra. The paper concludes with the concept of PATscheme sustainability and the cycle 2 of PATscheme.

Keywords- Sustainability, Perform, Achieve and Trade (PAT), Emission trading scheme, Renewable Energy Credit.
