Abstract

Lean thinking and Six Sigma have been utilized by manufacturing industries to decrease cost, improve quality and productivity by reducing variation and production defects. Acknowledging grand success in terms of global profitability and customer satisfaction in corporate world, Service sector can also be benefited by the application of the same to achieve similar benefits in testing laboratory; Lean and Six Sigma is currently being spread in several laboratories around the world. Acknowledging this situation, few articles have been published in the peer-reviewed literature on this subject. Lean manufacturing is known for waste elimination, while Six Sigma focuses on quality. An ideal laboratory should meet accuracy and quality in testing. Combination of Lean and Six sigma can provide benefits to testing laboratory in terms of accuracy and quality. The aim of this article is to clearly focus on different features of Lean, Six Sigma and its successful applications in testing laboratories, as well as to systematically review articles and books discussing Lean and Six Sigma strategy implementation in the laboratory field
