K-MEANS + CLARKE & WRIGHT ALGORITHM FOR OPTIMIZATION OF VEHICLE MOUNTED DRINKING WATER PURIFICATION UNITS– A CASE STUDY

Abstract

The paper is concerned with the optimum routing of a fleet of vehicle mounted drinking water purification units (Jaldoot) that collect and purify water at the water source and delivers it at door steps of industrial &household customers in rural areas.Jaldoot is a unique 3-wheel rickshaw fitted with a ultra-filtration membrane based multi-stage water filtration unit which removes micro-biological and viral contaminate.The objective is to minimize the total distance travelled, which is directly proportional to the transportation costs and minimize the number of vehicles. The paper investigates how quantitative techniques can be adapted in real life logistics environment and evaluates their benefits on a specific application instance.The problem is falls under the category of vehicle routing problems. The case presents a capacitated VRP. Attempt is made to represent the optimal routes on google maps in order to facilitate the vehicle drivers.A new hybrid algorithm is proposed. The solution is found using cluster first and route second approach. Clusters are initially formed using K-means clustering algorithm. Optimal routes within each cluster are formedusing Clarke & Wright Savings
