Abstract
Skill shortage is the biggest concern that the industries are facing today. In one hand we have educated unemployed youth not getting suitable job while industries are crying for not having required skills available in potential employees. Even existing employees lack the required skills and thus they are less efficient causing loss in productivity. With the advent of new technologies, processes and globalization of economy, the job requirements have changed drastically. New skills are needed for the Machines/Equipment/Processes of the future, which will fundamentally different from what we have today because of the technology. The new skills required are like a Seamless integration of code, control units, new components and getting all these to work together. Hence one should look at the Matrix which will help evaluate the quality, knowledge, skill of the person and the job. For evaluating the job, traditionally we have been using IE technique of “Job Evaluation (JE)” and assessing the grade required for the job holder. JE is based on factors like education, efforts, stress, strain and working condition. Now, with introduction of new technology, in addition to these factors new set of factors or characteristics like dexterity, safety, business impact, etc are necessary factors and are required to be considered in to-day's competitive environment. Anew approach called 'Skill Identification” has been discussed in this paper. Skills for the job and also for the job holder are required to be assessed and identified in quantitative term for skill building. The difference between skill requirement of job and skill possessed by existing job holder is identified. This skill gap is bridged by developing suitable training programme on new required factors and training the job holder
