Abstract
In this era of fierce competition and robustness in manufacturing quality level, accuracy and precision are the two dire necessities for manufacturing industries. To define the process variability in terms of sigma levels, setting a target and implementing a structured approach to achieve the target is becoming a challenge. However, the common direction continues to be on reducing the number of defects and then the variability in the process to sixsigma level. The paper addresses a case of the implementation of six-sigma using the DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyse, Improve and Control) approach to attain a level of accuracy and precision. Implementation of the DMAIC approach has resulted in a significant reduction of defects in a Tier-1 High-pressure die-casting manufacturing industry. The paper attempts to highlight the application of the simple but structured problemsolving methodology to deliver significant gains in a process quality improvement journey.
