INVESTIGATING THE PERCEPTIONS OF LEAN MANUFACTURING PRACTICES IN NORTHERN INDIA SMES: AN EMPIRICAL STUDY

Abstract

Lean manufacturing is a world class manufacturing technique which eradicates the wastes within the system and makes the firm more competitive in this unprecedented world of challenges. Some recent stories scripted the success stories of lean manufacturing practices in Indian context but their factor related to its adoption is a topic of research. In this present work, the factors related to the adoption of lean manufacturing practices in SMEs termed as lean perceptions are investigated in Northern India. The factors were selected from the extant literature review and validated by the method of percent point score method. From the investigation it is revealed that focusing on customer needs, eradicating waste, maintaining quality policy, market research and continuous improvement are some of the factors that led towards the adoption of lean manufacturing practices in their organization. In other words, the era of market research points towards the thrust for customized products and it can produce when the people of the organization strive for continuous improvement practices. A model for these perceptions is also depicted in this study which can gather the attention from the practitioners and proprietor of the industries.
